1980 - 1981
Harry James Potter was born in Godrics Hollow to Lily Evans Potter and James Potter. Sirius Black, James' best friend, was named as Harry's godfather. The three adults all belonged to the Order of the Phoenix, a clandestine group devoted to fighting Voldemort, despite the fact that they were small in number.
James and Lily had evaded Voldemort's murderous intentions before but due to a betrayal on the part of Peter Pettigrew, who at the last moment was made the Secret Keeper (rather than Sirius Black) for the Fidelius Charm meant to hide the Potters, Voldemort attacked them in their house in Godric's Hollow on Halloween of 1981. James died first and then Lily, while she attempted to protect her infant son. But when Voldemort cast the Killing Curse on the baby, it rebounded against him and almost destroyed him. Lily's sacrifice and her love had apparently produced an ancient magic which protected Harry, who was left with a lightning-shaped scar on his forehead as the only physical proof of the attack.
Albus Dumbledore arranged for Harry to live with muggle relatives until the time came for him to attend Hogwarts.
1981 - 1991
For the next ten years, Harry had to endure living with the Dursleys at number 4, Privet Drive in Little Whinging, Surrey, who had their own son named Dudley, roughly Harry's age. Vernon and Petunia, Lily's sister who was jealous of having a witch in the family, did all they could to keep Harry from becoming a wizard. They confined him to sleeping in a cupboard under the stairs, made him wear Dudley's old castoff clothes which were too large for the skinny lad, made him work every spare moment he had, and underfed him as well as not giving him any sort of nourishing love.
1991 - 1998
Despite their efforts to keep him out of Hogwarts, the Dursleys failed and Harry became a student of Hogarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Since all knowledge of the wizarding world had been denied him, Harry came to the school a total fledgling. He discovered his parents had left him a fortune of gold galleons at Gringotts Wizarding Bank, which meant he could pay for his own books and supplies.
Notable Events During the School Years
Year one (1991-92) -- Became best friends with Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, and Harry learned he could fly and he became a Quidditch player on Gryffindor's team, the youngest to do so in many years. He also came face to face with Voldemort and managed to defeat him again, keeping him from using the Sorceror's Stone for his own evil purposes.
Year two (1992-93) -- For the first time, Harry learns that Parseltongue is not a common ability and he saves Ginny Weasley's life when he kills the basilesque with the help of Fawkes the phoenix and the sword of Godric Gryffindor.
Year three (1993-94) -- Harry met Remus Lupin, who came to Hogwarts to teach DADA that year. He also met Sirius Black and discovered that the Azkaban escapee did not betray his parents, nor did he kill a dozen muggles that Peter Pettigrew blew up in order to escape and frame Sirius while it was assumed Pettigrew had also been blown to bits. Harry, Ron and Hermione discovered Lupin's secret of being a werewolf. After a school year of important discoveries, not much seemed resolved, however. Remus' secret was revealed by an angry Severus Snape and Sirius was a fugitive.
Year four (1994-95) -- At the end of the Triwizard Tournement, Harry sees his schoolmate, Cedric Diggory, murdered and this is his first time he consciously recalls seeing a murder, which in turn leads him to being able to see the Thestrals the following school term.
Year five (1995-96) -- Harry became the leader of Dumbledore's Army, he watched his godfather vanish behind the Veil in the Department of Mysteries and thought he'd never see Sirius ever again, and he learned about the prophecy which states that either he or Voldemort would have to kill the other.
Year six (1996-97) -- The terrible year that Dumbledore was killed. Of course, much more than this happened but the most important event was Harry learning about the Horcruxes and that he had to find and destroy them. Harry also stepped into more mature shoes and he knows for the first time that he is strong enough to do what has to be done.
